Best Ophthalmologist Robert Filer

Robert Filer, MD was raised in Toronto, Canada. He began his training at the University of Western Ontario in London, receiving a Bachelor of Science and earning a place on the Dean's Honor List. Dr. Filer received both his medical degree and master of surgery degree from the top ranked McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He continued his education at the University of Western Ontario, performing an internship in internal medicine. Dr. Filer then underwent additional training in ophthalmology, finishing a fellowship in Ocular Oncology Department at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Filer completed his ophthalmology residency, and served as chief resident at the Albert Einstein College of Medicines' affiliated hospital, the Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

Dr. Filer is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford University and regularly lectures to both medical students and ophthalmology residents about numerous topics in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery. Dr. Filer also teaches surgical procedures to the Stanford residents throughout the year. He is continually invited to speak to other physicians and optometrists throughout the Bay area as well.

Dr. Filer has been recognized as one of America’s top ophthalmologists on numerous occasions by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. He has also been the recipient of the prestigious Patients’ Choice Award, tabulated by MDx Medical, Inc. This award is given to less than 6% of the 720,000 active physicians in the nation. San Jose Magazine also recognized Dr. Filer as the Best Ophthalmologist in San Mateo County.

In a recent Specialist Satisfaction Survey performed by the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Mills-Peninsula Division, Dr. Filer was the number one ranked physician out of all participating medical specialists. In addition to being ranked number one, Dr. Filer performs more cataract surgery than any other ophthalmologist in the area. He was also one of the first local surgeons invited by Alcon Laboratories to the surgical training event following the launch of their multifocal cataract lenses. He was also the first Ophthalmologist in San Mateo to be certified for Laser Cataract Surgery on the Lensx laser system. Dr. Filer is proud to offer this advanced technology to all of his cataract surgery patients.

Dr. Filer is a past Ophthalmology Chairman at Mills-Peninsula Hospital. He is also a past Chairman of the San Mateo County Medical Association’s Young Physicians section, and he received an award for his work with the Society. He is also a previous chair of the Mamonides Society of the North Peninsula, and completed a term on the executive committee of the California Medical Associations’ Young Physicians section.
